Artists of New York

Videography | Artist Collaborations | NYC

About: A series of collaborations with New York artists where I offered my videography, editing, and art direction skills to help them achieve a goal: a creative project, an audition tape, and a contest submission.

INTERSTICE

In collaboration with dancer and children’s book author, Tessa Allen, Interstice is a video project that investigates the potency of what goes left unsaid. We started by interviewing friends and family with a focus on body language and the emotion evoked through hand gestures. Tessa then choreographed dance routines that evoked and mirrored our subjects’ hand gestures. We invented storylines to accompany the “alter-ego” of the untold details of those stories that are absorbed through physical signaling.

APPROACH

  • Interview individuals with the camera placed on their hands.

  • Ask them a series of open-ended questions such as "tell us about a time you felt scared" or "tell us about the first childhood memory that comes to mind".

  • Compare listening hands footage to speaking hands footage.

  • Study and translate hand gestures into dance choreography.

  • Script a video that mirrors the hand gestures and the accompanying dance story.

SPRING PICNIC

I collaborated with dancer and children's book author Tessa Allen and her dance partner Krystalla of Rat King Theater to film their audition tape for an artist residency. The pair's work has evolved alongside their friendship and life circumstances, intertwining the realities of relationship into poetic movement.

EMBROIDERY

I filmed artist Kenneth’s embroidery process for a competition on the practice. Inspired by the film Phantom Thread.
